Oklahoma City Memorial

Having been to the Oklahoma City Memorial on two occasions, there is no need for me to look at the web sight to see the imposing black gates, the chairs that light up in the darkness, and the thought full black reflecting pool. It is a very sad place to visit even on bright summer days and very humbling on cold dark days. On entering the memorial a person must walk through one of the huge black gates that tower. Above each entrance is the time before and after the bomb's explosion, symbolizing how quickly the world can change. The chairs are strategically placed in the locations where the offices were located families bring flowers to the put in the beside the chairs. The chairs, them selves, at night look like bright thrones for lost lives to sit. A bright place between two dark gates next to a dark pool. The flowers brought to the memorial keeps the keeps the memorial alive; the flowers help people realize that it was not very long ago that the bombing occurred. The reflection pool made of black stone absorbs the light from the green sounding area, causing the atmosphere to quiet and allow for contemplation. The memorial combines darkness and light to create a place were the past can be remembered and the hope for the future.

  1. Heather-
This is a lovely post about an obviously important place from your own travels. I've never had the chance to visit the site in person and was really struck on the virtual tool about that use of light and dark that you mention. I was also really noticing how your own writing adopted the tone and mood of the place- serious, moving, important-feeling.
    Great response-
